A concubine, Kaarina, bore four children to Duke Juhana, heir to the throne of Sweden. Kaarina was granted leave from the court when the Duke married Katariina Jagellonica, Princess of Poland. Set in 16th century Finland, the play deals with the administration of power and the authority of a woman – her choices, her rights to independence and love.
