Lallukka, kommercii sovetnik iz Karelii (Lallukka, kauppaneuvos Karjalasta)

This play is based on fact and fiction. It describes a poor boy’s struggle to earn a place in the sun. With determination and vigour, the early 19th century enterpreneur Lallukka gradually climbed his way to success to become one of the richest businessmen of his time, and with his wealth a huge patron of the arts. Through the fates of Lallukka and his contemporaries are shown the titanic changes of the period: the commercial and cultural might of an upper-class who spoke a foreign language began to crumple, a hierarchical society was on the verge of collapse. The introduction of suffrage was extended to all. For all this, also Lallukka fought. (Source: Author)
