The Unknown Patient has been staged more than a thousand times. The play’s effect is based on its internal contradictions: the busy hospital administrators make decisions regarding the care of the mentally ill without any real knowledge of the situation. Due to a misunderstanding, the chairman himself winds up as a patient at the mental hospital, where he is confronted with his own absurd works and decisions as an unknown patient.
